First Rule of Thumb by Brent Mason
First Rule of Thumb was written and recorded by Nashville's top session guitarist Brent Mason. This is such a fun tune to play with the old-school rag feel and catchy melodies.
First Rule of Thumb
I think everyone agrees on the fact that Mr. Brent Mason is a beast, and his tunes are pretty hard to play. This one is not an exception. I would say the adequate level for this tune is intermediate to advanced. Especially, for those of you who would like to practice chicken picking (which involves a pick, middle finger, and ring finger), it would be such a great material to brush up your skills, as well as acoustic solo guitar and country guitar playing in general.
First Rule of Thumb is from his one and only solo original album Hot Wired. This album is full of incredible tunes you would love. Even if you are not a guitar player, it will be like a smack in your face. But if you are one and did not have a chance to listen to it, I recommend doing so. I'm certain that you will enjoy it.

Playing Tips
Probably the most important element of this tune is the swing feel. So if you are not familiar with chicken picking, solo-style guitar, or swinging, I would recommend starting with a relatively slow tempo and gradually speeding up as you get used to the vibe.
Enjoy playing!
